The town of Gallipoli is 37 Km from Lecce. The distance from Brindisi Airport (Airport of Salento) route is 91 km, 1 hour drive on a 4-lane highway.
Washed by the Ionian Sea, it lies on the west coast of the Salento peninsula in the Gulf of Taranto. The town of Gallipoli is divided into two areas: the ”old town“ and the ”new village“. The charming old town, rich in ancient buildings and frescoes, stands on an island connected to the mainland by a seventeenth-century bridge masonry. Around 1500 they build the walls that surrounding the entire island, from which you can enjoy fantastic scenery. Looking north you can see a part of Nardò coast, while to the south is clearly visible for the Green Bay. In this area there are many bathing beaches where you can have fun and dancing on the beach. Crossing the bridge, immediately we encounter the last bastion of an ancient past, the greek-Roman fountain, considered the oldest fountain of Italy, but it is now certain that it goes back to the first Renaissance. Behind the Greek Fountain, we find the Church of Canneto. Built between the late thirteenth century and early fourteenth this church has always been defined as ”the fishermen's church“, because she accepts their prayers before embarking to go fishing. And often the same stretch or fishermen repair their nets and prepare hooks right outside the building.
