Coast of Lazio luxury villa — with stunning views over the Tyrrhenian sea and the Pontine Islands, Villa Lanti looks out from a protected mountainside within a national park: one of the most exclusive seaside locations in central Italy, yet only an hour or so from Rome. This is a prestigious and beautiful villa in a lovely setting — a very special place indeed. Villa Lanti was designed by modernist architect Michele Busiri-Vici and is considered one of his masterpieces. Distinctive features — such as the organic curves bathed in the special quality of light you find only in the Mediterranean — reflect many influences, from Italy's arts-and-crafts tradition to North Africa and Gaudi. There are several terraces with plenty of lounge chairs so you can relax and enjoy the tranquillity and the sea view. You are surrounded by a spectacular Mediterranean garden and in the distance you can see Naples, Mount Vesuvius and Ischia. A rough wooded path will bring you down to a swimming cove (half a mile's walk from the villa), or you can walk (or drive) half a mile along the road to a famous hotel with health spa, a fine restaurant, chic bar, private beach and pool, all of which are open to non-resident guests. The small, nearby resort town of San Felice Circeo is centred around a medieval piazza, and there are plenty of restaurants, cafés and stylish shops here. Since the 1950s San Felice Circeo has been well-known to Italians and in summer well-to-do Romans rent villas and frequent the local beaches. Beside the swimming options at Circeo itself, just around the headland stretch the 15km-long sands of Sabaudia Beach, one of the finest in Europe. Activities in the region include hiking, swimming, cycling, walking, tennis, sailing, bird-watching, riding, windsurfing, snorkelling, water-skiing, fishing and canoeing. A rich array of archaeology and prehistory — caves inhabited by ancient peoples — is a mere stroll away. Further afield and reachable in just over an hour by train is Rome, and you can get to Naples and Pompeii in an hour and a half.
