Apulian period town villa with pool — Set in a lush exotic garden in the suburbs of Lecce, Villa Moresca is a charming period property just a short drive away from this elegant Baroque city and the perfect starting point to explore the Salento peninsula including the Adriatic and Ionian coasts.
Built in 1890 and embellished with many Moorish architectural features such as beautiful arched doors, high-vaulted ceilings and garden fountains, the villa is simply furnished for easy summer living. It's biggest charm is without doubt the two acres of impeccable gardens bursting with an array of Mediterranean and exotic plants. Stylish outdoor furniture is purposefully arranged throughout the garden to offer guests the chance to relax whilst enjoying this green oasis, perfectly complemented by a sizeable salt-water pool.
The immediate surroundings are typical of Italian city suburbs, so there is little to recommend San Cesario di Lecce other than the convenience of a couple of small local restaurants a short walk away. But we have chosen this villa for it's proximity to Lecce; considered to be one of the top 10 most beautiful cities in Italy, and nick-named'the Florence of the South' this superb historical city flourished in the 17th century and rivals its better known counterparts further north with unique architecture hewn from local soft stone in a Baroque style, known as barocco Leccese.
A stay at Villa Moresca also allows for daily outings along both the Adriatic and Ionic coastlines, in search for the best sandy beaches or the most scenic clifftop hiking trails. Famous on the Ionic side for its velvety sandy beaches is the bay of Porto Cesareo with the unspoilt Conigli islands. Further south is Gallipoli (also on the train line from San Cesario), another gem of the Ionic sea with an enchanting old town and marina. Most towns and villages in this part of Puglia, known as Salento, feature summer gastronomic fayres, patron saints' festivals and folk music displays, capturing the imagination and the heart of visitors who keep coming back year after year.
Small, local amenities 500 metres, including local train station (Lecce 1 stop, 5 mins). City of Lecce 5 miles for a wide selection of shops, cafes, bars and restaurants. Galatina 9 miles. Nearest beaches San Cataldo 11 miles, Le Cesine 12 miles, Porto Cesario 19 miles and Torre dell'Orso 20 miles. Nardo 19 mile. Gallipoli 24 miles. Otranto 26 miles. Brindisi airport 35 miles.
