Cabanas de Tavira is a fishing village bordering the Ria Formosa Natural Park.
The name of the village comes from the word cabanas (huts). They were built here at the beginning of the 18th century as warehouses for the storage of fishing tackle by local fishermen. Later, dwelling houses or Cabanas were built here. Soon Cabanas de Tavira turned from a quiet village into a popular tourist attraction. It attracts thousands of visitors every year for its secluded beaches.
Despite the growing importance of tourism, the inhabitants of Cabanas continue to fish, which is reflected in the local cuisine. Ingredients such as tuna and shellfish can be found in any restaurant in the village.
