Calpe, also known by the Valencian name of Calp, is a city in the Region of Valencia (Spain), located along the coast to the north of Alicante, in the Marina Alta district. It has a population of 25,190 inhabitants, of which over half are foreign. The Peñón de Ifach, a 332 metre high rocky crag, rises majestically over Calpe´s coastline and is one of the symbols of the Costa Blanca. Calpe´s average yearly temperature lies between 12º C and 28º C. Calpe was traditionally a farming town, producing almonds, raisins and carob pods its economy was also driven by fishing and salt extraction from its salt flats, which are now a nature reserve. However, since the 1930s when Ernest Hemingway spent the summer there, and even more so since the 1960s, it has become a tourist town, and its economy, town planning and even its population have changed greatly. The festivals in Calpe are a perfect indicator of the town? s multicultural nature, with festivals such as the Moors and Christians, typical to the Spanish Levante coast, being organised alongside German Beer Festivals and the local carnivals, known locally as the German Carnivals. Calpe has become a service sector town that has nothing to envy the major Spanish cities.
