Torrevieja is situated to 41 km away from Alicante, 23 km from Elche, and 53 km from Murcia. It was originally a salt-mining and fishing village as it is located between the sea and two large salt lakes (Las Lagunas de La Mata-Torrevieja), which give Torrevieja a healthy microclimate.
