In September 2021, a new migration law 4825/2021 came into force in Greece, which for the first time introduced the legal concept of a digital nomad. According to the law, Greece grants a national visa for 12 months to citizens who work independently or to employees who work remotely with employers and clients outside Greece. With the Digital Nomad Visa, it is possible to obtain a temporary residence permit for Greece.

Available for people with an income of €3.500 or more

In order to obtain a digital nomad visa in Greece, it is necessary to prove a monthly income in a bank account of more than €3,500 after tax in your country and provide information on the source of funds: an employment contract with one or more employers for the period covering the visa period, or information about your own business.

Visa applications may be submitted to the Greek consulate in person or by email or registered letter. Applications are processed within 10 days.

Visas for family members of digital nomads

The main applicant may be accompanied by family members:

  • spouses or partners under a cohabitation agreement;
  • children under 18 y.o.

Family members obtain separate visas for the same duration.

The monthly income sufficient for obtaining a visa is increased by 20% for the spouse or cohabitant and by 15% for each child. The minimum income for a family of two adults and two children will be €5,250.

Temporary residence permit on a digital nomad visa

Holders of a digital nomad visa and their families are entitled to obtain a temporary residence permit for Greece and to renew it every two years, as long as the income conditions are maintained.

In order to obtain or extend a temporary residence permit, one must:

  • apply to the Greek migration service before the end of the digital nomad visa period;
  • pay the state fee of €1,000;
  • submit a contract to rent or purchase accommodation in Greece;
  • stay in Greece for more than 6 months per year.

The digital nomad visa and the temporary residence permit do not entitle the holder to employment and entrepreneurship in Greece.
