This beautiful Cognac chateau with heated pool is next to a village church, just a short walk from local shops and restaurants in this lovely part of the Poitou-Charentes. It has been within the same family indirectly for 800 years and is steeped in local history. The owners have sympathetically renovated to provide modern accommodation and facilities within the ancient walls, whilst preserving the heritage of the building; such features as cobbled floors, painted heraldry shields, oak panelled walls, tiled and wooden floors, beamed ceilings and of course beautiful old fireplaces. Outside, a remarkable 200-year-old lime tree still provides a shady escape from the heat. Why not start your day with a gentle stroll into the village for your morning coffee and croissants, and end the day with a private chef prepared meal in the chateau for an easy-going, relaxed holiday. It would be a pity not to venture out and explore; Angouleme's old town has cobbled streets packed with buzzing and friendly restaurants and cafes, and a visit to Cognac to sample the delicious local brandy is a must. The Poitou-Charentes is the land of Richard the Lionheart, birthplace of Eleanor of Aquitaine, site of many Roman remains and lies on the St Jacques de Compostelle Pilgrim route into northern Spain; there are endless possibilities for cultural excursions to medieval villages and Roman towns. But this is also a region of agriculture, forests, lakes and rivers. Gastronomy and wine are important here; the Poitou-Charentes red, white and rose wines more than stand up against their rivals from the Loire and Bordeaux. You cannot leave without sampling the local aperitif, Pineau des Charentes, which is made by adding unfermented grape juice to Cognac. Seafood features strongly thanks to the long Atlantic coastline; make sure you try the ultra-fresh oysters of Marennes d'Oleron, renowned across France. Discover the black chicken of Barbezieux, delicious goats’ cheeses and even cognac-imbibing snails!
