Halkidiki is the most popular tourist destination in northern Greece. It is a peninsula divided into three smaller parts known as the three legs of Halkidiki. The first and most popular is Kassandra with many tourist resorts and organized beaches. The second peninsula is Sithonia, with less organized resorts and more isolated bays. The third peninsula, Mount Athos, is a close monastic community, where only men are allowed to enter and after receiving special permission. Halkidiki is home to the most developed beach resorts and tourist sites in Greece and has an amazing summer nightlife with beach parties that also attracts young people.
Halkidiki can be easily reached from Thessaloniki, the second largest Greek city. Due to its large size, tourism in Halkidiki is scattered, thus creating the development of beach tourist destinations. The first peninsula is the busiest, and the second one is less visited, but even more beautiful. The second peninsula is more popular with campgrounds. Most of the organized beaches in Halkidiki are lined up next to hotels and restaurants.
