Beautifully renovated and refurbished, Casale Le Macine is a wonderfully private old olive mill located near Lucca, just outside the village of Castelveccio di Compito – a few minutes’ stroll through olive groves and tree lined paths. Catering comfortably for up to 12 guests, the light, spacious rooms throughout the villa are studded with charming details; original beams, marbled bathrooms and ancient olive press sit alongside the fresh décor, bringing a true sense of Tuscan style to a perfectly finished home. The large, welcoming lounge has comfortable sofas and a wood-burning fireplace, whilst the architect-designed kitchen is professionally equipped, with a large dining table suitably sized for cookery school sessions on request. The heady aroma of herbs is carried through to the kitchen on the gentle breeze from the Mediterranean garden just outside the door, with further glimpses of neat rows of fresh produce in the vegetable plot. On the upper floors, the six bedrooms comprise two double suites with luxurious adjoining sitting areas, two further double bedrooms and two twin bedrooms — all with connected bathrooms, air conditioning and luxurious mattresses and linens to ensure restful sleep. Outside the villa, the large saltwater swimming pool takes the shape of the original mill pond and has a curved shallow section for children. The surrounding landscaped terrace and gardens are perfect for relaxing, with summer kitchen/dining area, ample umbrellas and sunbeds all placed to take full advantage of the breath-taking views! For cooler evenings, the main dining salon is warm and atmospheric and still has the original olive press and grinding stones, whilst the villa’s wine tasting room and cellar are happy additions, with a superb selection of wines provided on an honesty basis and sommelier on request. Perfectly placed for exploring the surrounding villages and towns, Casale La Macina is within easy reach of local amenities, including the hilltop village of Buti with medieval castles, churches and restaurants for lazy afternoons of lunching. Neighbouring Bientina offers a weekly market, monthly antiques market and summer festivals in the main square, and the beautiful, larger town of Lucca is just a 20-minute drive away. Historic Pisa and Florence are 30 and 45 minutes respectively. See a video of the grounds here
