Thailand plans to expand the Sandbox tourism program
According to the travel news portal CNN Travel, the Phuket Sandbox extension plan is scheduled to start on August 15.
Under this scheme, tourists who have already spent seven days in Phuket will be able to come to other pilot destinations — such as Koh Samui, Phi Phi Islands, Ko Pha-ngan, Ko Tao, Krabi, Ko Ngai, Railay Beach, Khao Lak and Ko Yao, if the program is approved.
The government has planned to approve a similar scheme in the northern city of Chiang Mai in the coming weeks, followed by the rest of Thailand by October this year.
Tourism leaders in Phuket have asked the world governments to consider the island a "green zone" for travel in order to launch the pilot programs successfully.
Earlier, the global news publication platform Insider announced on July 1, the Thai authorities developed the Phuket Sandbox program and opened up the island of Phuket to international vaccinated travellers without quarantine. Since that moment, the island has been able to welcome several thousand foreign tourists.
According to the plan, tourists who have come to the island will not have to stay in a hotel in quarantine. They have to remain in Phuket for a minimum of 14 days before being allowed to travel to other parts of the country. All tourists have to provide a number of documents, including a certificate of entry, proof of vaccination, and a negative RT-PCR result.
