Transport in Koh Samui: how to get around the island
All infrastructure in Koh Samui is located along a 52-kilometre road around the island. The centre of the island is covered by tropical forests and mountains. There is no public transportation in Koh Samui, so it is recommended to rent a car or use taxi services for getting around.
Tuk-tuk (songthaew) in Koh Samui
Irregular public transport with no fixed fare. It is a vehicle with an open space for carrying passengers. Tuk-tuks run between beaches, and the fare must be negotiated in advance with the driver and paid without change.
Taxis in Koh Samui
Taxis on the island can be ordered by phone at the reception or hailed on the street. The fare from one beach to another can be up to $12.
Moto Taxi
A form of taxi service offered by local residents using their own vehicles. The price should be agreed upon in advance.
Bike Rental
Renting a motorbike is the most popular way for tourists to get around the island. You can rent a vehicle anywhere on the island, and the monthly rental cost starts at $80. It is advisable to have an international driving licence to arrange the rental. Insurance should include «active leisure» coverage to provide emergency medical assistance in case of an injury related to riding a bike. Traffic on the island is left-hand.
Car Rental
Renting a car is safer than renting a bike, and the cost starts at $40 per day. However, some drivers may find it difficult to adjust to the island’s left-hand traffic.
