Mai Khao Beach is the longest beach in Phuket and the least affected by development. If your idea of a Phuket holiday is two weeks of peace and quiet in a villa with the sea on your doorstep, then Mai Khao is definitely worth considering.
Developers have yet to fully utilise the potential of northern Phuket. While attempts were made during the peak tourism years, the COVID-19 pandemic thwarted these efforts. Consequently, Mai Khao currently boasts 12 kilometres of pristine coastline, adorned with slender casuarina pines and luxurious hotels behind them.
Following the 2004 tsunami in Thailand, building regulations changed, even though tsunamis rarely reach Thailand and it is Indonesians who suffer most from disasters in the Pacific and Indian Oceans. As a result, it is now forbidden to build within 400 metres of the sea.
Furthermore, the latest regulations allow only two-storey buildings close to the shore. Three-storey buildings must be constructed a little further from the water, four-storey buildings even further away, and so on. Phuket's first beach resort was opened on Mai Khao and still exists today. It is now called The Slate. Other nearby resorts include Renaissance, JW Marriott, Sala Phuket, Anantara, and Mai Khao Dream Villas.
In addition, there are two large residential complexes built here: MBC Condotel and 777 Beach Condotel. The area lacks infrastructure and road traffic, providing a peaceful escape from the bustle of resort towns.
