Chalong in Phuket, Thailand: the ideal winter destination
Chalong is situated to the north of Rawai and has an even more expat-oriented lifestyle than its southern neighbour. The closest beach for Chalong residents is Nai Harn, which even Rawai residents access by car or motorcycle rather than on foot.
Foreign interest in Thai real estate is expected to continue in the upcoming years. This market has a low entry threshold, with prices starting at an average of 100,000 US dollars in tourist areas and 150,000 US dollars in more developed resort areas. In some developing locations, offers as low as 70,000–80,000 US dollars can still be found, which is not available in other popular holiday destinations such as Turkey or Montenegro.
However, the demand for Chalong among winter visitors is even higher than that of Rawai due to its strategic location and convenient logistics. Rawai is located at the southern tip of the island and is surrounded on three sides by the sea. In fact, there is only one road that leads north from there, which then splits into three at the Chalong Circle. This is a crucial junction where the highways to Rawai, Karon, Phuket Town and Kathu diverge.
Chalong residents may sacrifice proximity to the beaches, but in return, they gain convenient access to schools for their children (BCIS, ISP, etc.), as well as shopping centres for themselves (HomePro, Villa Market, and Thai Watsadu). Additionally, many residents have easy access to their workplaces. The area surrounding Chalong Pier is home to numerous travel companies that offer diving, boat tours, and other similar activities.
All expat services are in demand in the area, so many foreigners choose to set up businesses here. The restaurant in Ravai caters to Ravai residents, while the restaurant in Chalong attracts visitors from both Karon and Katu.
Housing in Chalong consists mainly of private houses or small apartment complexes. Due to the area's established nature, there are no empty spaces for large condominiums with hundreds of apartments. Therefore, new projects are typically compact. The demand for housing is high, both from experienced tourists who visit Phuket year after year and from winterers and expats.
Soi Taied Street in Chalong is widely known as the “Muay Thai boxing street” due to the presence of Thai boxing and other martial arts schools such as Tiger Muay Thai and Singha Muay Thai. This street has become a popular destination for fighters from around the world who come to train at these clubs, contributing to Phuket's reputation as a sports pilgrimage site. Phuket divers and windsurfers have traditionally been located in Chalong, and the Phuket Yacht Club is also situated in this area.
