Application process

  • Job offer: The first step is for the employer to provide a formal job offer to the employee. This offer should outline the terms of employment, including salary, benefits, and job responsibilities.
  • Employment contract: Once the job offer is accepted, an employment contract is drafted and signed by both parties. This contract must comply with UAE labor laws and regulations.
  • Entry permit: The employer then applies for an Entry Permit on behalf of the employee from the UAE’s Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE). This permit allows the employee to enter the country for employment purposes.
  • Medical examination: Upon arrival in the UAE, the employee is required to undergo a medical examination to ensure they do not have any contagious diseases. The results are submitted to the relevant health authorities.
  • Emirates ID: The next step involves obtaining an Emirates ID, a mandatory identification card for all residents in the UAE. The ID is obtained through the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICA).
  • Residency visa: With the medical examination and Emirates ID in place, the employer can then apply for the Employee Residence Visa. This is typically issued by the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) in the emirate where the employee is based.

Renewal and maintenance

Employee Residence Visas are typically valid for two to three years, depending on the employment contract. It is the responsibility of both the employer and the employee to ensure timely renewal before the expiration date. Renewal procedures involve updating relevant documents, such as the employment contract and Emirates ID, and submitting them to the GDRFA.
