Finland and Croatia to begin testing digital passports in 2023
Finland and Croatia have launched a pilot project which is called Digital Travel Credentials (DTC). The countries plan to test digital travel documents at the customs control in international terminals of air traffic.
Special equipment will be installed at Helsinki and Zagreb airports in order to check digital documents. Passengers access a mobile application for uploading their documents. Border guards will check documents in advance and take photos of passengers using facial recognition technology when they arrive at the airport. After that, they will not have to wait in line in terminals.
The European Commission has previously approved this digitization project. It is scheduled to be launched in spring 2023. The Netherlands and Canada are also beginning to launch similar initiatives. The countries hope to make travel easier and speed up border controls.
