Italy: real estate rental assistance during COVID-19

As tenants struggle amid the COVID-19 crisis, Italy’s regions take steps to support those in difficulty.

Broad measures have been implemented to assist tenants in difficulty that may also help landlords. However, this support is piecemeal, ultimately depending on the resources of local governments. According to Idealista, support will be provided in several parts of the country.

In the North, the Residential Building Company in Lombardy has implemented a range of measures to support families who rent their homes. This first stage of aid focuses on the most financially fragile who have suffered from the economic crisis. Milan, the region’s capital, has moved to delay the due date for the payment of rent and expenses on social housing until September 30th.

Next door in Tuscany, residents can apply for exceptional rental aid in the region. This step is for those who have delayed, reduced or suspended their activity or work. The grant will cover 50% of the property’s rental cost up to €300 per month.

In the Lazio region, home to the country’s capital, €43 million will be allocated to help people pay rent. The city of Rome has also reported that the public notice for the contribution to territorial rent will be released soon, promising easier and faster procedures. 

Further south in Campania, locals can apply for a regional rental benefit ranging from €1,800 to €2,000 depending on income. Equally, the island region of Sicily has allocated more than €7 million to support 5,000 Sicilian families with contributions to rent.
