Visa for Bali in 2024
By prioritising the attraction of international tourists and skilled professionals from abroad, Indonesia continues its journey towards opening up to the global community in 2024.
Since launching major reforms in 2015, significant progress has been made in creating a truly welcoming visa environment for different groups of foreigners. They can now legally reside, travel, work, do business, and study in various regions of Indonesia.
Let’s look at the types of visas available in Indonesia in 2024, how to obtain one, and some of the peculiarities of getting a visa in Bali.
Types of Visas in Indonesia
Those planning a short visit can obtain a visa on arrival at the airport and in advance online or at a consulate. There are a number of special visas that allow you to stay in Indonesia for up to 5 years or more for those planning a longer stay.
The Indonesian government regularly updates its immigration laws, expanding the visa options available to foreign nationals. For example, from April 2024, digital nomads can benefit from a 1-year remote worker visa (E33G).
Visa on Arrival (VOA) in Indonesia (Type B1)
Validity
Purpose
Price
A popular visa option for those planning to visit the country for tourism or as a transit stopover.
For the convenience of travellers, the entire Visa on Arrival process is simplified. Upon entry into the country at the airport or seaport, all that is required is a small number of documents to the immigration officer:
- a passport valid for more than 6 months from the date of arrival in Indonesia;
- a return ticket from the country confirming the temporary nature of the visit.
The visa on arrival fee is $31 (500,000 Indonesian Rupiah). Visa fee can be prepaid when applying online.
Visas on arrival are single-entry visas. One cannot enter Indonesia more than once with this visa. With a B1 visa, you cannot work or do business in Indonesia.
Electronic Visa on Arrival (e-VOA)
Validity
Purpose
Price
People from nearly a hundred countries can apply for a visa to enter Indonesia remotely from home.
Simply complete an application form with your details and pay using a bank card. There is no need to visit the consulate, and the visa will be sent directly to your personal account on the website.
This is the same as getting a B1 visa, which is usually issued on arrival at the airport.
Only in this case — there is a separate queue for immigration officers at the airport for passengers with e-VOA — an opportunity to save time and trouble.
You can apply for an e-visa up to 14 days before you travel. The migration directorate’s recommendation is to do this at least 2 days before arrival in Indonesia.
The visa is valid for 90 days from the date of approval. Print the document from your personal account in advance for presentation at the border.

Expatriate Relocation Gains Momentum as Bali’s Long-Term Visa Numbers Rise
Bali is set to be one of the top destinations for foreigners in 2023, thanks to a strong influx of expats, remote workers, and start-ups.
The number of applications has increased by 64% since 2022.
Increasingly, people are looking at the island not as a temporary vacation destination, but as a viable place to live, work, and do business. This trend is partly reflected in the decline in the number of short-term visas issued, which fell by a third last year.
There has also been a slight slowdown in the enthusiasm of potential expats, with the number of KITAS applications in the first quarter of 2024 down 32% compared to the same period last year.
The seasonality of demand in Bali is having an impact, with the peak traditionally occurring in July-September, while January-March is considered relatively low in terms of tourist traffic.
