Residence visa extension in the UAE after 6 months out of country

The United Arab Emirates had certain rules regarding residence visa extensions after spending more than six months outside the country. Generally, individuals holding a UAE residence visa are required to enter the country at least once every six months to maintain the validity of their visa.

The residence visa is automatically revoked if an expatriate lives outside the UAE for more than 180 consecutive days. In this case, they will need to apply for a new entry permit to re-enter the UAE.

If someone exceeds the six-month limit and wishes to return to the UAE, they may need to reapply for a new visa or renew their existing one, depending on the specific circumstances and visa type.

The expiry rule does not apply to investors holding valid residence visas in the UAE, students studying abroad, expatriate residents and their companions sent abroad for treatment and expatriate residents sent by their employers to attend training abroad.

Visa regulations vary based on the emirate, visa category, and individual circumstances. It is highly recommended to check with the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA) or the relevant immigration authorities in the respective emirate for the most accurate and up-to-date information.

UAE Residence Visa Re-Entry Rule

UAE residence visa holders can stay outside the UAE for up to 6 consecutive months (180 days) without their residence visa being automatically cancelled. If a resident stays outside the UAE for more than 6 months continuously, their residence visa will be automatically nullified (cancelled) by the immigration authorities.

Certain categories are exempted from this rule, including:

  • UAE Golden Visa holders (can stay abroad longer without losing residency).
  • Wives of Emirati nationals.
  • Government employees sent abroad for official duties or medical treatment (with valid approvals).
  • Students studying abroad.
  • Diplomats and certain other government-related personnel.

Residents outside Dubai who have spent over 180 days abroad may apply to ICP for a return permit if their residence still has more than 30 days remaining. This is not a general way to reactivate any cancelled or expired visa.

  • The application must be submitted from abroad.
  • A valid reason for the extended stay outside the UAE must be provided.
  • ICP lists a service completion time of 2 days; approval and travel arrangements may take longer.
  • Upon approval, the resident must return within 30 days.

ICP charges AED 100 for each month or part of a month beyond six months abroad, plus AED 100 for smart services. Applications for this ICP service can be made through:

  • ICP Smart Services website.
  • ICP mobile application.

Dubai residents use the separate GDRFA return-permit procedure.

The UAE has extended residence visa validity for many categories (5 or 10 years), reducing frequent renewals.
