In the United Arab Emirates, the process for obtaining a residence visa for parents is typically subject to certain conditions and requirements. The UAE government has introduced various visa categories to accommodate the diverse expatriate population in the country.

Eligibility criteria for the UAE Residence Visa for Parents

To apply for a residence visa for parents, the sponsor (an adult son or daughter who is a resident in the UAE) must meet certain eligibility criteria. The sponsor should typically have a certain level of income, job stability, and a valid residency permit.

Sponsor requirements:

  • Sponsors are often required to meet specific financial criteria, demonstrating their ability to support their parents financially. The expatriate resident must earn the minimum salary stipulated and obtain a medical insurance policy for parents with the minimum coverage for each of them each year.
  • DNRD in Dubai stipulates a minimum salary of AED 20,000 to sponsor parents’ visas.
  • The sponsor must have a valid UAE residence visa.
  • An expatriate can sponsor his parents for a year’s stay by paying a deposit as a guarantee for each parent, as stipulated by the respective immigration department.
  • The sponsor needs to provide proof that he or she is their parents’ sole support and that there is no one to take care of them back home.

An expatriate resident cannot sponsor only one of their parents. They need to sponsor both parents together.

Health insurance

Health insurance coverage is a mandatory requirement for obtaining a residence visa. Sponsors are usually required to provide proof of comprehensive health insurance coverage for their parents, covering medical expenses and emergencies.

Medical examination

Applicants for residence visas may need to undergo a medical examination to ensure they are in good health. This requirement is in place to protect public health in the UAE.

Application process and renewal

The application process typically involves submitting the required documents, completing the application forms, and paying the necessary fees. The sponsor may need to visit the relevant immigration or residency department to complete the process.

Once approved, residence visas for parents are usually issued for a specific period, often one year. Sponsors must ensure timely renewal of the visas to maintain their parents’ legal status in the country.

It’s important to note that immigration policies and procedures can change, and it’s advisable to check with the Federal Identity and Citizenship Authority (ICA) or other relevant government authorities for the most current and accurate information regarding residence visas for parents in the UAE.
