The old town of Kotor was included in the list of world cultural heritage in 1979 under the patronage of UNESCO. Kotor was first mentioned in chronicles in 168 BC. It was inhabited by the ancient Romans and is called the Acruvium. The Byzantine emperor Justinian I in 535 was engaged in the fortification of the city. But still, the city's true appearance was formed during the Venetian rule (from 1420 to 1797). Now Kotor is one of the best preserved medieval towns on the Adriatic.
