The first mention of the city dates back to the 3rd century BCE, when the city was a well-fortified settlement. Then the Illyrian queen Tetua ruled in it. At that time, the first mint in Montenegro was located here. During the Roman-Illyrian wars, the city was taken over by the Roman Empire for several centuries. It was the heyday of Risan, after which a unique heritage of ancient culture, architecture and art remained. During the Middle Ages, the authority in Risan changed many times. Now it is a small and quiet town with the necessary infrastructure and special flavor.
